The exhibition jumbles a huge range of propagandist photos, journalistic photos, and everyday portraits together into one show. Moreover, it displays the facets of the revolution that not everyone could see–the symbolic, the historical, and the sentimental. However, the absence of context was problematic for me.
The Affordable Art Fair had its first Fall annual fair in NYC on September 3o, 2010 with 60 international and local galleries. Contemporary art was made available to the masses with prices ranging from $100 to $10,000 (artdaily.org).
Entering the Tobacco Warehouse, one is greeted by paintings by Kate Fauvell hanging from the tent:
Everything is Fine is an installation by Erin Rachel Hudak, at the Tobacco Warehouse at the Dumbo Arts Festival. The bold red letters made out of red recycled plastic, stand out from far away, in the corner of a huge triangular shaped open space:
Erin Rachel Hudak has two artworks in Under Represented Artists Who Deserve More Attention: Look at Me While I Look Away and This Land is Your Land. Her work explores the “juxtapositions between our deepest desires and the undoing of ourselves, our environment and of each other”. According to her artist statement, she takes various images from mass media whether it be old history books, the internet or family photos, to discuss the irony of these desires as our greatest destruction.
In collaboration with Macy’s, El Museo Del Barrio collaborated in setting up an exhibit titled “Around the Way”, which opened on September 23rd at 6pm. This was also an exhibit in celebration of Hispanic heritage month… The pieces range from painting, sculpture, to video works and explore themes of social and cultural bonds to the places where they were born or raised
